The Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy is the national professional association of pharmacists and other healthcare practitioners who serve society by the application of sound medication management principles and strategies to improve healthcare for all. The Academy’s 5,700 members develop and provide a diversified range of clinical, educational, and business management services and strategies on behalf of the more than 200 million Americans covered by a managed care pharmacy benefit.

On the chapter level, we serve as an outlet for those students who are interested in a career in managed care pharmacy.  Meetings will be held roughly once a month and will focus on a topic in managed care.  Past speakers have come from UPMC HealthPlan, Walgreen’s Specialty Pharmacy, CVS Caremark, Accredo, Gateway Health, and Highmark.

This past year 8 students attended the 2014 AMCP annual conference in Tampa on March 31-April 4. We were pleased to have Jenn Baird, Greg Bresin, and Hyung Lee represent Pitt at the Chapter Leadership Academy while attending the conference.

Our annual Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) Competition will be held on Tuesday, January 27, 2015. The P&T competition is our largest chapter event. Students work on teams of 4 and analyze a new drug entering the market. The ultimate goal is to provide evidence to a committee of judges in order to support or decline the addition of the drug to a mock formulary. Chapter winners will submit their materials and may qualify to compete on the national level at the AMCP annual meeting.
