Experiential Learning Program

Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, Office of Experiential Learning Home Page. We hope the information provided will be of benefit to you.

Experiential Learning is a valuable and integral part of the pharmacy curriculum and has been incorporated over the four years of professional study. Designed as a student-preceptor learning experience, the goal is to strengthen the confidence, independence, and competence of the student. The purpose of experiential learning is to assure that the students receive the instruction and experience necessary to demonstrate competence in the provision of pharmaceutical care. Students receive both academic credit and credit by the Pennsylvania State Board of Pharmacy for licensure.

Students practice in a wide variety of settings under the supervision of selected preceptors. As teachers, they show students how to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to daily practice and evaluate their progress.

Professional experiential rotations at facility(ies) external to the University will or may require a criminal background check, an ACT 33/34 clearance, and perhaps a drug screen to determine whether you are qualified to participate in the learning experiences at the given site. All costs associated with background checks and drug screenings are the responsibility of the student. Additionally, in order to become licensed, many states will inquire as to whether the applicant has been convicted of a misdemeanor, a felony, or a felonious or illegal act associated with alcohol and/or substance abuse.
