IMMEDIATE Opportunity for Experiential Project Hours

Hi everyone,

Dr. Jonkman is looking for volunteers to assist with the P-1's "My First
Patient" experience (even though it's not called this anymore but it is
similar to what we completed with Dr. Stoehr). Their session is this
Wednesday, September 16, 2009 from 1:00-5:00. This can also be used
towards required Experiential Learning hours for EL5 which we will have
approved in advance. All that is required of you is attending, a short
reflection, and activity log.

We would be responsible for taking blood pressure (~6 people needed),
measuring peak flow (~3 people needed), taking blood glucose (~5 people
needed). Dr. Jonkman believes we will be concurrently learning this
things in Endocrinology and Pulmonology so we should be trained by that
date. However, if additional practice is wanted or necessary, this may be
arranged prior to the session.

We realize some people may have electives during this time and it is short
notice, however, if you are availabe and interested please get back to us
as soon as possible.

E-mail Dana at dkr3@pitt.edu

Thanks!

Jaci Schlott and Dana Riether
Rho-Chi service co-chairs

Week of November 26-December 2

Hey everyone!

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break and is ready for one more week before finals! I just wanted to let everyone know that although this is the last week this semester with information related to coursework, I will be sending out an abbreviated e-mail the next two Sundays. Next week I’ll be sure to include any deadlines/a summary of Experiential information and documents so you can keep them all in one place if you haven’t been saving the individual e-mails. Also, I’ll be sending a list (rare for me!) of our final exam schedule on 12/9 just to remind everyone once more.

I’ll have a couple of important announcements this week in class, but I also wanted to just get a few people’s response about having an end-of-the-semester class event on 12/14. I just wanted a general consensus if most, or some, of you would be interested – please let Gretchen, Greg, or I know!

My best,

Clinical Skills Competition at 4p in PCLC
Friday – PPA Annual Meeting (all weekend)

Students:
I am pleased to announce that the ASHP clinical skills competition is scheduled for the evening of October 4th. We are doing it a little differently this year to mimic the national competition. This year (assuming there will be more than 10 teams participate) will be run slightly differently from previous years. All teams will participate in the written case pharmacist care plan. These care plans will be scored according to the answer key. Only the top 10 scoring teams will then continue to the oral presentation competition component. This strategy mirrors the national competition exactly (and should make the evening a little shorter for everyone). I am planning a meeting with all participants early next week to review the competition process and rules (changed slightly from last year if you participated). The deadline to sign up is October 1st (9th floor student services). When you sign up, you will receive the practice case with answers and a copy of all the documents you will be using during the competition.
The schedule is as follows (can be a little flexible to accommodate conflicts - let me know):
4-6 pm Write up of pharmacist care plan
6-7 or 7:30pm dinner
7:30 announcement of written competition top 10 finalists
7:40 begin oral case presentations
Please contact me if you have any questions - I am happy to answer them. I encourage as many of you to participate as possible. The winning team will also participate in the PA Statewide Clinical Skills competition scheduled for Oct 11th in Mars, PA (during the PSHP Midyear meeting - free registration) and the national ASHP Clinical Skills competition in Las Vegas during the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting December 2nd (free registration provided and some travel support from the Dean's office). Participation in the national competition is a requirement of the winning team; the state competition is not mandatory, but highly encouraged.

This year lockers are again being offered for $10 a semester. If you are interested in purchasing a PCLC locker please contact Heather Derby in class or via e-mail at hed4@pitt.edu by the end of this week.

Integrated Clinical Skills Practicum

Hey everyone! Quick reminder that tomorrow we have to wear professional dress (white coats) for the Integrated Clinical Skills Practicum which will feature Dr. Block, a diabetes patient and Duquesne professor, discussing his history with the disease. This Endocrinology Practicum is 1:30-4:30.

Also, as indicated earlier from e-mails from Anna Schmotzer -- please disregard the previous e-mail indicating a time and show up for class at 10:15.

Next week, we'll have a weekly e-mail as we get started and by the next week, it'll be back to the lengthy thing you're used to!

Hope everyone is doing well this first week and that this was informative and not just "another e-mail", haha.

My best,
Matt

Welcome Back!

Hey everyone... welcome back for the 3rd and final time for classes!

Just wanted to let everyone know to explore the revised Student Portal, as it is more user-friendly in its sophomore edition. The website is students.pharmacy.pitt.edu. In addition, just wanted to let everyone know, that might not know already, that books for Immunology and Law are in the at the Campus Health Book Store.

Also, I know there have been a lot of rumors floating around about rotations and Experiential Learning. I know many people are uneasy/concerned. As a result, we will be having discussion about the issues and accreditation standards this Thursday, Aug. 30 during the morning Experiential Learning time @ 9a with Dean, Dr. Howrie, etc. Please bring questions as this will be the most informative/definitive source of information.

Lastly, I wanted to congratulate all of the newly engaged and married people in our class as well as anyone celebrating a birthday this summer.

We'll be back to the normal long, detailed e-mails beginning next week (I'm sure you all can't wait)!

My best,
Matt
