Curriculum Committee Course Review

This year, the Curriculum Committee will be reviewing the Drug Development 3 course. As we did last year for Biochem, we are looking for approximately 5-10 volunteers to participate in a discussion about this course and its role in the curriculum. This is an opportunity for us as students to take a more active role in guiding our education.

We will be conducting this course review either on Wednesday April 22nd after the GI exam or
Thursday April 23rd before the end of year party. If you are interested in participating, please email Morgan (morgan.b.adams@gmail.com) or Taylor (tjm33@pitt.edu) with the day you would prefer.

Thank you for your help with the course review process!

Conversation With the Dean

This wednesday, at lunch (the room is TBD and will be announced in class), we will be having our conversation with the Dean, like we did last year. She will be open to any and all questions (attendance is mandatory). Lunch will be provided.

I am sorry that this came at such a late notice, I just received an email, and due to the time constraints on the Dean's schedule, this was the best available time. I understand it is right before our POP exam, and I apologize. Thank you for your understanding.

BTC Debate

As per an announcement Dr. Pater posted on courseweb today:

Dear Class,

It should go without saying that your attire for the debate should be professional in nature.... You do not necessarily have to wear your labcoats, but professional dress is required. Professional dress goes along with portraying a credible image.

Our guest speaker will arrive to speak at 3pm as he has a flight to catch.... we will break during the debates to hear him talk and to allow time for questions/answers from him, then the debate will resume. This means that class tomorrow may run later than usual, and you may be there until 4:30 or so (as per the class schedule, class technically ends at 5pm on Tuesday).

thank you,

Dr. Pater

2. Rho Chi Sale of business cards and padfolios ends Friday.

3. Here is some info on the guest speaker we had today:

(voting is tomorrow (Thursday) on my.pitt.edu from 8a-8p)

Justin ROMEO for President
-Create an Endowment Fund that will increase funds available to student organizations, with greater flexibility in funding, and allow for more SGB funded student events and trips.
-Establish SGB awarded student scholarships to recognize students for their outstanding performance in the areas of undergraduate research, academics, school spirit, and beyond. Students should be recognized by their peers for excellence!
-Create a Commonwealth Coalition of Student Governments in the state to pool our resources in lobbying governments on the Federal, State, and Local levels. This will be especially helpful to Pharmacy Students who see their rights constantly being threatened by legislation on the
state and federal level.
-Increase the quality of Campus Dining by formalizing the Food Committee, including the implementation of a late-night takout option at Market Central.

Ada NOH for Board

Global Health Film Series

n our effort to raise awareness of global health issues, IPSF will be hosting the second installment of the Global Health Film series this Friday, November 14th, in room 355 from 12-1. All our welcome and encouraged to attend and snacks will be provided!

"How Safe Are We?" (narrated by Brad Pitt)
50 minutes long
During the past 100 years, life expectancy more than doubled in developed countries. In the last few decades, however, thirty new infectious diseases have emerged and one of them — AIDS — is becoming perhaps the most devastating epidemic in history. New diseases travel the globe with unprecedented rapidity, and older killers that once seemed controllable are
roaring back with a vengeance. "How Safe Are We?" examines the most critical threats we face today — including avian flu — and the pressing need to strengthen global public health systems.

*Need not to have seen to first episode to attend this.

If you have any questions feel free to e-mail or ask Alexa Ray or me.

Steeler Raffle

Earlier this year the community of Robert Morris University suffered a devastating tragedy at the hand of gun violence. My name is Lindsay Schlott and I am working with several different organizations on the RMU campus to help raise money for the soul survivor of this tragedy.

Our goal is to help Michelle Machusko and her family with the expenses they will incur as a result of this heartbreaking incident. I sat next to Michelle in class, and she was a very nice, sweet, ordinary person who did not deserve this. There are several donation and fundraising
opportunities that we will be organizing.

Our first fund-raiser is a Steeler's Raffle Basket and it includes:
Two tickets to a Steelers Game ($150),
Two long sleeved thermal shirts ($47),
Two pairs of Steelers gloves ($13),
A gift card to Subway ($15), two terrible towels ($8),
Two Steelers hats ($30),
And two rain ponchos ($12).

The total cost for the basket is $275, and the game is the November 20th game; Steelers vs. Bengals.

The tickets are:
One ticket = $1.00
Five tickets = $3.00
Ten Tickets= $5.00

The drawing will take place on November 14th, and ALL proceeds go to
Michelle and her family.

With your help, we hope to lessen the financial burden on Michelle's family and give them hope for the future.

Lindsay Schlott (Jaci's Sister), will be coming in to class on Wednesday at 9am to talk further about this, and she would greatly appreciate your support.

The presentation is casual, so feel free to come sit-back, relax, and enjoy the show.

"Delivering the Goods"
At the dawn of the 21st century, we can prevent, treat or cure most of the deadliest diseases known to humankind — and yet millions die needlessly every year because the benefits of modern medicine and public health fail to reach them. What are the obstacles to providing care to populations in need? From the villages of the Gambia to the cities and towns of Thailand, from the sun-scorched refugee camps of Chad to the teeming streets of Bangladesh — this episode chronicles innovative health programs and charismatic leaders who, against all odds, are Delivering the Goods to millions of individuals — and inspiring a new vision for the future of global health.

Project CHANCE

Our APhA-ASP chapter won a grant to implement a project in our community to help the underserved population in clinics in the area. The initiative is called Project CHANCE - which stands for "Chapters Helping Advocate for Neededing Communities Everywhere." We have decided to start a mental health initiative that is going to start with depression screenings at the Birmingham Clinic this fall. In order to help students get a better understanding for some of the issues surrounding mental health in the underserved population, we have arranged a 3 part lecture series throughout this semester. The attached flyer has the dates and details for all of these speakers - the first of which will take place WEDNESDAY SEPT 17th from 12-1. If you are interested in participating in this project or just have
an interest in mental health issues, we welcome you to attend these presentations. As per Dr. Pschirer, time spent at the Birmingham Clinic helping implement these depression screenings will count towards experiential learning requirements. We will be starting sign ups for clinic times in October. If you have any questions, please email Kat Kingston at katherine.kingston@gmail.com. Thank you! There are flyers posted all over the school!

Dr. Bies Questions For DD Exam

Exam Questions Drug Development II (choose 2 of 5)

1. Please distinguish among the various approaches for describing population or group information. Comment on biases introduced in many of the methods and explain why the nonlinear mixed effects approach appears to alleviate these.
2. Please define fixed effects in a population pharmacokinetic context.
3. Please define random effects in a population pharmacokinetic context. Pay particular attention to identifying effects of different hierarchies and how this contributes to understanding information.
4. How does the incorporation of random effects aid in the identification of individual specific characteristics (covariates) that help to describe drug disposition. How does this contribute to the utility of a population pharmacokinetic model in guiding treatment at an individual level? Incorporate a comment regarding the assistance in the a-priori and a-posteriori case.
5. Describe an example of the use of population pharmacokinetics in adjusting dosages. Please pay special attention to the comparisons across the full population as well as a subset of populations that better reflect the individual in question.

Bonus Question:

Please provide the symbolic mathematical notation for a nonlinear mixed effects model incorporating time, fixed effects and three hierarchies of random effects (between individual variability, between occasion variability, residual unknown variability)
