GPSA Elections
GPSA (Grad & Professional Students Assembly) is having elections and Shashi Sriram is running for the post of VP committees, Shashi needs your help!
Shashi is the only Pharmacy student running for the assembly board post this year, and is hoping to get maximum support from our PharmD students. Other nominees are from Law, A&S, Medicine, Engineering and Public health.
The voting period is between March 23 to 27 and votes are cast through www.mypitt.edu (there will be a "GPSA Elections" tab after log-in).
Shashi will send a reminder and the procedure to vote through www.mypitt.edu when it is active next week.
About GPSA:
GPSA takes the professional/graduate students concerns/voice to the university administration, thus having a student prospective in all the university policies. It also provides funding for travel, organizations/legal services/discounted events to students.
More on GPSA: <http://www.gpsa.pitt.edu/about.html>
Often the GPSA assembly board is populated from few departments/schools, leaving the scope for bias as these members may miss some issues unique to us. Having a SOP member on the GPSA assembly board gives us an opportunity to make our issues visible to the policy makers.

Per Melissa Ruminski:
"Hey P1 class,
The curriculum assessment committee wants to include the POP final in the

them to POP on Wednesday and I will collect them during class and deliver
them to the committee leader. This is not mandatory but we would
appreciate your cooperation. The committee will be discrete in their

Volunteers Needed
Dr. Pater is looking for 5 or 6 volunteers from the P1 class on Tuesday afternoon, November 11, to assist with a POP3 practicum involving "standardized patients." The student-patient interactions will be videotaped so the students can self-assess and use the videos in their electronic portfolios, and so that student performance may be assessed by faculty not present to observe the "live" encounter.
The P1 volunteers would be responsible for camera operation. One training session prior to the practicum may be necessary to ensure familiarity with the camera operation.
If interested, please contact Adam <anm74@pitt.edu> as soon as possible so that appropriate planning arrangements can be made.

Committee Representation for Our Class
Hey guys,
Just a reminder that TOMORROW is the deadline for submitting to me your interest in joining one of the six committees in representing our class. If you are interested, I need your name, desired committee, and a 50 word MAX write-up about yourself stating who you are, why you are good for this position, etc. Below I have posted which committees still lack representation from our class:
Code of Conduct Committee (1 student needed)
Curriculum Assessment Committee (1 student needed)
Experiential Learning Committee (1 more student needed)
PharmD Program Council (2 students needed)
The following are the descriptions for each open committee:
CODE OF CONDUCT COMMITTEE
In accordance with University of Pittsburgh policy, the School of Pharmacy has a Code of Conduct Committee whose function is to delineate and uphold the professional and ethical practice standards of pharmacy as outlined in the Code of Conduct. The Committee recommends policies and procedures related to student and faculty conduct, integrity, professionalism and dress in the classroom, at professional experience sites and anywhere that students represent the School of Pharmacy. In addition, members of the committee are charged to evaluate alleged violations of the School of Pharmacy Code of Conduct that have not been resolved at the student-faculty level and to provide recommendations for appropriate action.
This Committee is composed of faculty members from the Departments of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmacy and Therapeutics, as well as one student member from each class (P1 through P4) and one graduate student member. In the fall semester of every year, the current P1 class elects one student representative to serve on the Code of Conduct Committee. The term of service is four years. In the event of a resignation, a substitute will be elected to serve. Meetings are usually held each term, with additional meetings as necessary to accomplish the mission of the committee.
For more information or questions, please contact Dr. Amy Donihi, Chair, Code of Conduct Committee, 412-647-6051 or calabresea@upmc.edu.
CURRICULUM ASSESSMENT COMMITTEE
The Curriculum Assessment Committee is charged to implement the school’s assessment plan and coordinate assessment activities (including the student portfolio process) that collect information about the degree to which students attain the school’s 13 curricular outcomes (see Standard 15 in the ACPE Standards and Guidelines at http://www.acpe-accredit.org/pdf/ACPE_Revised_PharmD_Standards_Adopted_Jan152006.DOC for more detailed information). A significant focus is on the analysis of assessment measures and integration with other bodies within the School, based on the results of those analyses, to improve curricular quality, student learning, and the achievement of the professional competencies.
One student from each of the P1, P2, and P3 years serves on the Curriculum Assessment committee to represent student perspectives on the issues and ideas discussed. Once selected in the P1 year, students continue their service throughout the P2 and P3 years. P4 students are welcome to continue their participation as their rotation schedules permit.
The schedule of meetings for the Curriculum Assessment Committee has not yet been set. It is anticipated that the committee will meet at least once monthly, but not more than every other week.
For more information or questions, please contact Dr. Amy Seybert, Chair, Curriculum Assessment Committee, 412-647-6170 or seybertaa@upmc.edu.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING COMMITTEE
The Experiential Learning Committee is responsible for experiential learning program development, evaluation, and improvement consistent with the mission and vision of the School of Pharmacy to meet its strategic outcomes as well as accreditation standards. The Experiential Learning Committee is the central body for the management of orderly and systematic reviews of curricular structure, content, process, and outcomes as they relate to the experiential learning portions of the curriculum.
The Director of Experiential Learning and Continuing Professional Development serves as chair of the committee. Other members include the associate dean for education and the experiential learning course coordinators for each year of the professional program. Staff members include the assistant director for the experiential learning program. Six students participate in a non-voting capacity. Two student members are elected representatives each of the first, second, and third professional years. Students generally serve for the duration of their participation in the School of Pharmacy PharmD professional program. Students are encouraged to actively participate in meeting discussions by providing insight regarding student concerns and needs as they pertain to the experiential learning curriculum.
For more information or questions, please contact Dr. Jim Pschirer, Chair, Experiential Learning Committee, 412-383-5229 or pschirer@pitt.edu.
PHARMD PROGRAM COUNCIL
The PharmD Program Council is an integrating body composed of faculty, staff, and students that focuses on all aspects of the PharmD program. The Council reports to the dean of the school of pharmacy through the Leadership Team. The members of the Council are the chairs of the standing faculty committees of the PharmD program and staff members who have primary responsibility for the program, students, and applicants.
The PharmD Program Council provides a communication forum for participants on actions and issues related to the PharmD Program, and it has accountability for achieving the strategic outcomes for the PharmD Program. The Council identifies issues and solves problems related to the PharmD Program, and it can recommend new policies and procedures as well. Two students from each of the P1, P2, and P3 years serve on the Council to represent student perspectives on the issues and ideas discussed. Once selected in the P1 year, students continue their service throughout the P2 and P3 years. P4 students are welcome to continue their participation as their rotation schedules permit. The PharmD Program Council meets once monthly, on the 2nd Thursday of each month at 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., in 234 Salk Hall.
For more information or questions, please contact Dr. Susan Meyer, Chair, PharmD Program Council, 412-624-8153 or smeyer@pitt.edu.

Project CHANCE
Our APhA-ASP chapter won a grant to implement a project in our community to help the underserved population in clinics in the area. The initiative is called Project CHANCE - which stands for "Chapters Helping Advocate for Neededing Communities Everywhere." We have decided to start a mental health initiative that is going to start with depression screenings at the Birmingham Clinic this fall. In order to help students get a better understanding for some of the issues surrounding mental health in the underserved population, we have arranged a 3 part lecture series throughout this semester. The attached flyer has the dates and details for all of these speakers - the first of which will take place WEDNESDAY SEPT 17th from 12-1. If you are interested in participating in this project or just have an interest in mental health issues, we welcome you to attend these presentations. As per Dr. Pschirer, time spent at the Birmingham Clinic helping implement these depression screenings will count towards
experiential learning requirements. We will be starting sign ups for clinic times in October. If you have any questions, please email Kat Kingston at katherine.kingston@gmail.com. Thank you! There are flyers posted all over the school!

Project Community
I hope that everyone has had a great summer so far, but we are nearing the end, which means we will begin our P2 year. Many of you shared your interest in the project community idea of late last year and I am following up with this email to see who would be interested in doing a local Oakland cleanup the weekend of August 30th or the weekend of September 6th. Please email me feedback on which of these dates would work for you. Also if you have done any sort of community service over the summer let me know what activity you have done and how many hours you have completed. Please get back to me as soon as possible about your preference, and I look foward to seeing all of you in the coming weeks.

Finals Week and Other Important Information
Starting this summer, and going through the rest of the years here, there will be a Technology Committee. We are looking for 1-2 people who are interested in helping to improve the technology of the SOP. You do not have to be technologically inclined to be a part of this committee, but will have to be available for monthly meetings at a minimum. If interested please email me asap.
As far as Dr. Kwon's lectures go- for the cancer section, the lectures were not internet based. He will not be asking questions that are from the internet, only from his lectures. He recommends that if you do not understand something from those lectures, since the material is not in our book, that the internet is a good resource to understand THE GENERAL IDEA. He does not expect us to pick up details from the internet. If you would like me to further expand on this please email me or call me and I will do so on an individual basis if you still have concerns.
The class officers would again like to thank everyone for a great first year, and we are all excited to be representing the class again next year. Have a safe and happy summer. As always if you ever need anything, have any comments, questions, suggestions or concerns please feel free to drop an email or call. Thanks.

Tomorrow's POP Class and Project Community
Hello Everyone,
Dr. Stoehr just sent me an email asking that everyone dress up for tomorrow's guest lecturers from CE City. White coats are not necessary, however professional dress is. Thank you.
Also, to reiterate what Dan announced. Project Community is a nationwide project run by students at Shenandoah University to increase student outreach. They are asking, as are we, that each Pharmacy Student in the Class of 2011 pledge 6 hours of community service by the end of the calendar year (December). Any community service you do counts as long as it is done in Allegheny County. Dan will also be organizing events over the summer and during parts of the school year to get more hours for everyone doing such things as cleaning up Oakland, and volunteering at various shelters, among other things. If you have any suggestions for some events please speak to Dan. Thank you, and we hope that you all participate as this is nationwide and other Schools of Pharmacy will see our particpation %. Thanks.

Make Money!
Opportunity #1:
UPMC is looking to hire a P1 as a Medication Safty Technician. The position is max 20 hours a month (usually 10-15) and requires you to go around Presby to different accudose machines counting pills and checking outdated meds, ensuring medication safty and what not. You are assigned around 10 (i have 10) nursing stations and are required to do an inspection of them monthly. It a great job for during the school year because you have no set hours, come and go as you have time. It is also good for someone who has no hospital experience to get their foot in the door of UPMC; you really get to know the pharmacists and residents and can just see how clinical pharmacy is run. Joanne is looking for employees for the duration of P2 and P3 years and summers are required. More hours are also available for the summer months.
Any questions feel free to contact me (KMS85@pitt.edu), Joanna Kowiatek (KowiatekJG@upmc.edu) or Liz Forsberg, P3 (forsbergea@upmc.edu)
Opportunity #2:
Assistance for test candidates with disabilities . . .
Wohl Communication Services, Inc., is a disability accommodations service that places Readers/Recorders (scribes) to assist disabled test takers (through the Americans with Disabilities Act) who are taking exams for job certification, licensure, or admittance into college or graduate school. We work with most of the major testing services nationwide (ETS, ACT, Comptia, Prometrics, and many others) and provide these services throughout the United States and internationally.
We are looking for people to read and/or record computerized tests to visually impaired or disabled candidates in the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area.
READERS will be responsible to sit next to the examinee and read the questions and answers choices from the computer or test booklet. For this reason, the Reader must have a clear English speaking voice and excellent vocabulary.
RECORDERS will be responsible to record the answers by using the mouse to click on the examinees' chosen answer. Some tests have short essay questions that will need to be typed. For this reason, recorders must be able to type and be good spellers.
The testing company will pay the Reader/Recorder $20 per hour and guarantee payment for the full time we ask him/her to be there even if the exam ends early. If there are those that are not available for this exam but are interested in reading for us for future exams in the Pittsburg area, we would like to hear from them.
To apply or gain more information email us at office@wohlcomm.net or call 1-888-340-9272 and ask for Julie
Joyce, or Randi. You can also visit our website at www.wohlcomm.net

AMCP- Info from Rob Snyder
* AMCP is having a meeting that will be either Tuesday November 20th or Thursday November 22nd at 12 noon, depending on the availability of the guests invited. Students attending this meeting will learn more about the profession of managed care pharmacy; as well as any internship, residency, employment, etc. opportunities. We will also choose teams for the 2007-2008 Pharmacy & Therapeutics Competition at this meeting.
* The 2007-2008 AMCP Pharmacy & Therapeutics Competition will begin this January 2008. P1s, P2s, P3s, and P4s are encouraged to participate. Teams of four students will complete a case study for Tekturna that results in a formal presentation to judges at the school providing a formulary decision. The winner at the school competition will be entered in the National AMCP Competition. The top 8 teams nationally receive a free trip to the AMCP National Conference in San Francisco in April 2008 to compete in the national Competition. The University of Pittsburgh has placed in the top 8 nationally for at least the last three years, and I hope to have a team represent Pitt nationally this year. All classes (P1-P4) are encouraged to participate - it is a great learning experience! At our meeting either November 20th or November 22nd (Stay tuned to the Portal - I will post the date, location, and time when I have confirmation from our guest speaker) we will be picking teams for the competition. Therefore, if you are considering competing you must attend the meeting so we can place you on a team. If you are unable to make the meeting, please email Rob Snyder at rjs47@pitt.edu and I will make sure you are placed on a team. If you have any questions about the P&T Competition before the meeting, please email me and I will answer any questions you may have. I hope to see you at the meeting.

Class
Hi Everyone,
I have received several complaints from faculty as well as your fellow students. Class time is a place for learning, it is not to be used as a social hour. Please respect the rights of other students in your class to learn and to be able to hear the professor. Please respect the professor, the lecture, and the amount of time they take out for us so that we can be successful. Please respect the times that we are scheduled to be in class. Please give your full attention to those making announcements, or any guest lecturers that we may have. Even if you feel that something does not apply to you, it does apply to someone, and that person or persons has the right to hear it without disruption.
Please take this seriously and appreciate how hard everyone has worked to get to this point. The information we are getting now is what we will be using for the rest of our lives in our respective professions. Please do not have personal conversations in class, please do not stand up while the professor is talking, please do not make noise or do anything to disrupt the learning of others in class.
Please respect the rights of everyone and to be blunt, be courteous of others. If anyone has a problem with anything that I have said, feels that they cannot agree to this, or has any other opinions that they would like to voice to me please contact me. I am here to help make this year go as smoothly as possible.
Have a nice weekend. Thanks guys.

Hello all, this is Dan Mancini informing you that Dr. Vollmer has agreed to go to the bodies exhibit at the Carnegie Science Center. I talked with the people at the science center and they said if we get 15 people at the very least, we can get tickets for $10.00, rather than the usual $22.00 price tag. They need to know in advance, so I'm thinking anytime after the biochem test/halloween... what days are people available to go? Call or email me.
